Netflix to Release a Powerful Documentary on Jim Morrison – Coming July 20, 2025

Netflix has officially announced the completion of production on one of its most anticipated music documentaries yet—a deep, immersive exploration into the life, mind, and legacy of Jim Morrison, the legendary frontman of The Doors. The film is set to premiere globally on July 20, 2025, and promises to reveal the man behind the myth in a way audiences have never seen before.

“We’re happy to announce that we are done with production and it will be released on 20th July 2025,” Netflix said in a statement earlier today. “This documentary captures the essence of Jim Morrison—not just as a rock icon, but as a poet, philosopher, and cultural disruptor.”

Titled The Lizard King: The Untold Jim Morrison, the documentary will take viewers on a journey from Morrison’s quiet upbringing in Florida to his meteoric rise as the enigmatic voice of The Doors. It will trace his evolution into a counterculture icon, exploring the art, rebellion, and mystery that made him one of the most captivating figures in music history.

Directed by critically acclaimed filmmaker Lena Price, the documentary has been in production for over two years and features rare archival footage, unreleased poetry readings, and personal journal excerpts that reveal Morrison’s most intimate thoughts. Price was granted access to materials never previously shown to the public, courtesy of Morrison’s estate and longtime collaborators.

“This isn’t just about fame or the music,” Price explained. “It’s about searching for identity, questioning reality, and expressing something primal through words and sound. Jim Morrison wasn’t just a frontman—he was a seeker, and that’s the story we wanted to tell.”

Viewers will also hear firsthand accounts from surviving members of The Doors, including Robby Krieger and John Densmore, as they reflect on their time with Morrison—the magic, the madness, and the lasting impact of his presence both on and off stage. Friends, lovers, artists, and critics also provide insight into the man whose charisma often overshadowed his complexity.

The documentary will explore Morrison’s fascination with death, mysticism, and transcendence, themes that bled into his lyrics and on-stage persona. From the hypnotic chaos of The End to the haunting poetry of An American Prayer, the film dissects how Morrison used art to confront the darkest corners of human experience.

Special attention is paid to his final years in Paris, where Morrison sought refuge from fame and began to see himself more as a poet than a rock star. Viewers will see rare footage of Morrison during this time, as well as newly unearthed writings that reflect a man caught between immortality and self-destruction.

In addition to immersive storytelling and historical footage, the film will feature remastered concert performances, early demo tapes, and voiceover narration drawn from Morrison’s own words—bringing his voice back to life in the most literal sense.

Netflix will release the official trailer in mid-June, along with a series of teaser clips leading up to the global premiere. A special fan event titled Breaking Through to the Other Side will stream live on July 19, featuring exclusive interviews, a roundtable with music historians, and reflections on Morrison’s cultural legacy.

Social media is already buzzing with excitement, as fans of Morrison and The Doors prepare to witness a side of him that has remained hidden for decades. Hashtags like #JimMorrisonDoc and #NetflixLizardKing are trending, building anticipation for what many are calling a must-see event of the year.

So mark your calendars for July 20, 2025. Netflix is inviting the world to step into the fire, poetry, and mystery of Jim Morrison—an eternal voice that still speaks from beyond the doors of perception.
